When I got into the car in Kelenföld in the morning, heading to Diósd, I basically only had three words in mind: rock, cave, dancer. I even thought, what a great, complex video this is going to be! Then, when I arrived on location and looked around the beautiful quarry in Diósd, one more thing came to mind: orange. In truth, it was only during editing that I realized we had actually captured a story that had been there in front of us the whole time.

In case the story isn’t obvious: Zsombor, the creature, just wants to chill and do some Beyoncé-ing in his cave. But suddenly he notices a camera filming him. He tries to escape, and in the process runs through a laser gate. He then attempts to chase away the cameraman—tension builds. The next day, it happens again: he sits there a bit withdrawn, frustrated that he isn’t being left alone. Then he runs again. We left the ending open, allowing space for interpretation, but one thing is certain: it’s a drama!

EastUnBloc was a tough nut to crack. Right in the heart of Berlin, at Alexanderplatz, there’s this large gallery, nGbK. Ever since I found out about this project, I knew that somehow, at some point, I would end up working on it. But I only really fell into this universe during the last two weeks.

Even though it’s a media art exhibition, so much of it had already been figured out that at first I found it difficult to find my place in it. Then, when we started installing the exhibition two weeks before the opening, it suddenly became clear that one tiny detail hadn’t really been planned: who was actually going to put together all these countless TVs, projectors, media players, and kilometres of cables. Yay.

All these devices span roughly 50 years of technological history. My trusted companion became Valentin, a Ukrainian media artist, and after an incredible amount of struggling, we eventually managed to get everything working—with all the adapters, completely different inputs, cables, and formats.

I really love record covers, and I even have two big albums of them. I decided that for the Creative Day program series, the promo animations will always draw inspiration from an album cover. Here’s the first one: Goo by Sonic Youth.

Actually, I think this should also be included in this section. I’m currently exploring the possibilities within Interkép, and I’ve come to the conclusion that, besides the odd live performances (which I find difficult to “art” on my own), this is really the format I’d most like to experiment with. This is just the first week’s one; I definitely want to make it wilder later on.

It was a very long struggle, but looking back now, it was worth it. There was almost a year of back-and-forth with the city planning department to submit the request for changing the townscape in the proper form. Before that, we had to incorporate all sorts of color and lettering requests from the architects into the plans, then I ended up not liking the whole thing myself, so I started over. In the meantime, I finished the visual identity for Lakótér, and that also had to be integrated into everything. But in the end, it got done, it was printed, put up, and now it looks great!
